Abstract

Cilj istraživanja
Cilj ovog rada je dati sveobuhvatan pregled stručnih i znanstvenih spoznaja o biljnoj vrsti Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng., uključujući mehanizam uroantiseptičkog djelovanja, nekliničke i kliničke studije, indikacije i kontraindikacije, potencijalne interakcije s lijekovima, farmaceutske oblike na hrvatskom tržištu te regulatorni status i kontrolu kakvoće proizvoda.
Materijal i metode
Istraživanje u okviru ovog rada je teorijskog karaktera i uključuje pregled dostupne literature o predloženoj temi. U pretraživanju se koristila stručna literatura te dostupne elektronske bibliografske baze podataka kao što su: Current Contents, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library. Važan izvor informacija su i mrežne stranice relevantnih hrvatskih i europskih institucija (Agencija za lijekove i medicinske proizvode, Ministarstvo zdravstva, Europska Agencija za lijekove i medicinske proizvode i Europska agencija za sigurnost hrane).
Rezultati
Biljna vrsta Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. (medvjetka) se tradicionalno koristi zbog svojih antimikrobnih svojstava, prevenstveno u liječenju blagih rekurentnih infekcija donjeg urinarnog trakta. Uroantiseptička svojstva medvjetke temelje se na sadržaju arbutina koji se u crijevima hidrolizira do hidrokinona, a zatim brzo apsorbira, metabolizira i izlučuje putem urina. Pripravci na bazi lista medvjetke dostupni su kao biljni čajevi te tekući ili čvrsti oblici koji se uzimaju na usta. Rezultati rada donose sveobuhvatan pregled stručnih i znanstvenih
spoznaja o medvjetki, s naglaskom na kontrolu kvalitete, sigurnost i učinkovitost različitih farmaceutskih formulacija te regulatorni status proizvoda.
Zaključci
Prikazani podaci u radu opisuju medvjetku kao biljni lijek za nekomplicirane infekcije kod žena te ističe novije zaključke iz studija koji bi mogli doprinijeti boljem razumijevanju uroantiseptičkog djelovanja medvjetke i njezinog terapijskog potencijala te pružiti relevantne informacije o regulatornom aspektu, farmaceutskim oblicima i razini znanstvenih dokaza. Rezultati ovog rada mogu doprinijeti razvoju biljnih lijekova za urinarne infekcije te pružanju učinkovite ljekarničke skrbi.

Abstract (english)

Objectives
The aim of this research was to represent the data of the conducted studies on Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng., including uroantiseptic activity, clinical and non-clinical data, indications, contraindications and interactions, pharmaceutical forms availible in Croatia as well as their regulatory status and and quality control.
Material and methods
Research in this paper is a theoretical one and includes a detailed overview of the available professional and scientific data on the topic. Relevant bibliographic database such as Current Contents, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, Medline and Cochrane Library are searched. Also Croatian and European regulatory institutions were important sources of information.
Results
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. (bearberry) has been used traditionally for its antimicrobial activity, primarily for treatment of symptoms of mild recurrent lower urinary tract infections. The uroantiseptic activity of bearberry is due to arbutin, which is primarily hydrolyzed in the intestines to hydroquinone, and then rapidly absorbed, metabolized, and excreted via the urine. Bearberry leaf preparations are available as herbal tea and in liquid or solid forms to be taken by mouth. The aim of this research is to give a comprehensive overview of professional-related and scientific evidence of bearberry with focus on quality control, safety and efficacy of different pharmaceutical formulations as well as regulatory status of the products.
Conclusion
In this research bearberry is represented as an effective herbal drug for mild recurrent infection for women. Pointed up were newer studies and conclusions which could aim to better use of existing drugs and also production of new drugs for urinary tract infections. Also results could contribute to more effective professional pharmacist practice.
