Abstract (english)

The aim of this work was to provide information about the anatomy and the function
of sweat glands and to discuss the mode of action of antiperspirants and deodorants.
Sweat is a secretion produced by eccrine sweat glands and it consists of a dilute electrolyte solution containing mainly sodium chloride, potassium, ammonia, bicarbonate and
some organic compounds such as lactate and u rea. Eccrine sweat glands are present
almost ali over the body and their main function is thermoregulation. Apocrine glands
are odour-producing glands, they are localised mainly on the axial, mamrnary areola, the
anogenital aerea, the scalp and the abdomen. Different diseases are connected to sweating, hyperhidrosis the most often among thern.
To control sweating and to avoid the unpleasant odour of the sweat, products containing antiperspirants and/or deodorants are used. Antiperspirants are mostly aluminium salts that reduced the secretion of the sweat by causing mechanical obstruction of
the apoeccrine sweat duet. Deodorants act by reducing the number of bacteria that are
responsible for creating unpleasant odour by decomposing the components of sweat.
Furthermore, deodorants act by forming unvolatile salts of different lower acids present
in the sweat. The formulations on the market contain mostly the combination of antiperspirants and deodorants together with different perfumes that masks unpleasant odour
of the sweat. The formulation of the product should be customised to the skin type and
should be applied on the healthy, dry skin, at least 1 hour after depilation.
Recently, there has been a lot discussion about the connection of the ingredients in
the antiperspirants and deodorants and the breast cancer. Aluminium salts and parabens were selected as cancerogenic substances. Numerous investigations did not find any
significant connection between substances of underarm cosmetic and breast cancer.
Therefore, those products could be applied without any concern about the risk of breast
cancer.
