Abstract

Potočarka - Nasturtium officinale W. T. Aiton je višegodišnja vodena ili poluvodena
biljka iz porodice Brassicaceae. Uzgoj ove biljke se temelji na njezinim dobrim
nutritivnim svojstvima, pri čemu se u kulinarstvu koristi kao salata, svježe prešani sok
ili dodatak drugim jelima. Iako je od davnina pronašla svoje mjesto u tradicionalnoj
medicini, njezina biološka svojstva su još uvijek nepoznata i nedovoljno istražena.
Fitoterapijski potencijal ove biljke temelji se na bogatstvu bioaktivnih sastavnica,
među kojima su najvažniji izotiocijanati (hidrolitički produkti glukozinolata) i
polifenoli. Do sada su istražena njihova antioksidacijska, antikancerogena,
antibakterijska, protuupalna, antidijabetička, hipolipemična i kardioprotektivna
svojstva. Brojna recentna biotehnološka istraživanja potočarke usmjerena su na
dobivanje vrijedne biomase za prehrambenu, farmaceutsku i kozmetičku industriju.
Temeljem dosadašnjih spoznaja, potočarka se može svrstati u biljke s velikim
potencijalom primjene u suvremenoj fitoterapiji koje su vrijedne istraživanja.

Abstract (english)

Watercress - Nasturtium officinale W. T. Aiton is a perennial aquatic or semi-aquatic
plant from the Brassicaceae family. The cultivation of this plant is based on its good
nutritional properties. It isused in cooking as a salad, freshly squeezed juice or as an
addition to other dishes. Although it has been used in traditional medicine since
ancient times, its biological properties are still unknown and insufficiently studied.
The phytotherapeutic potential of this plant is based on its richness in bioactive
constituents, the most important of which are isothiocyanates (hydrolytic products of
glucosinolates) and polyphenols. To date, their antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial,
anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hypolipemic and, cardioprotective properties have
been investigated. Numerous recent biotechnological studiesonwatercress are aimed
at obtaining valuable biomass for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
According tothe current knowledge, watercress can be classified as a plant with great
potential for use in modern phytotherapy, which still needs to be explored.
