Abstract

Sindrom policističnih jajnika (PCOS) je jedan od najčešćih metaboličko-endokrinoloških poremećaja, koji pogađa otprilike svaku desetu ženu reproduktivne dobi. Ovaj sindrom značajno povećava rizik od kardiovaskularnih bolesti, pretilosti, dijabetesa tipa 2, neplodnosti, te anksioznosti i depresije. Unatoč visokoj prevalenciji, PCOS je nedovoljno istraženo i vrlo kompleksno područje. Pored genetske predispozicije, okolišni čimbenici poput neadekvatne prehrane i stresnog načina života također doprinose razvoju ovog sindroma.
Trenutno dostupne terapijske opcije za liječenje PCOS-a su ograničene. Najčešće se propisuje hormonska kontracepcija kao antiandrogena terapija koja ublažava simptome i sprječava formiranje novih cista na jajnicima. Međutim, hormonska terapija nosi niz nuspojava i nije adekvatna za žene koje planiraju trudnoću.
Cilj ovog diplomskog rada je sustavno pregledati i analizirati učinkovitost, mehanizme djelovanja, doziranje, interakcije i moguće nuspojave dodataka prehrani, kao i učinkovitost nefarmakoloških mjera s najvišom razinom dokaza u liječenju PCOS-a. Fokus je stavljen na relevantna istraživanja, uključujući opservacijska i intervencijska istraživanja te sustavne pregledne radove i meta-analize, kako bi se pružile jasne smjernice za pacijentice i zdravstvene djelatnike o učinkovitim opcijama koje mogu poboljšati ishode liječenja i kvalitetu života žena s PCOS-om.

Abstract (english)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common metabolic-endocrine disorders, affecting approximately one in ten women of reproductive age. This syndrome significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes, infertility, anxiety, and depression. Despite its high prevalence, PCOS is an under-researched and highly complex area. In addition to genetic predisposition, environmental factors such as inadequate diet and a stressful lifestyle also contribute to the development of this syndrome.
Currently available therapeutic options for the treatment of PCOS are limited. Hormonal contraception is most commonly prescribed as antiandrogen therapy to alleviate symptoms and prevent the formation of new ovarian cysts. However, hormonal therapy carries a range of side effects and is not suitable for women planning pregnancy.
The aim of this thesis is to systematically review and analyze the effectiveness, mechanisms of action, dosages, interactions, and possible side effects of dietary supplements, as well as the effectiveness of non-pharmacological measures with the highest levels of evidence in the treatment of PCOS. The focus is on relevant research, including observational and interventional studies, as well as systematic reviews and meta-analyses, in order to provide clear guidelines for patients and healthcare professionals on effective options that can improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for women with PCOS.
