Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Products that are declared as "natural cosmetics" contain a large number of substances of natural origin. The paper presents an overview of herbal ingredients, animal products and isolated natural products in 27 cosmetic products sampled from the Croatian market. The most common ingredients were those derived from species Olea europaea, Simmondsia chinennsis and Vitellaria paradoxa. A review of the literature has shown that those herbal ingredients could have hydrating and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and might thus contribute to maintaining the skin in good condition, which is one of the main purposes of cosmetic products. among the ingredients of animal origin most represented was emulsifier lanolin and beeswax products. Pure ingredients of natural origin used in the tested products are mostly used for perfuming purposes. Among the ingredients that could demonstrate biological activity the most notable example is green tea extract in anti-aging products, due to its anti-wrinkle effect. Results of this study suggest that the ingredients of natural origin can have an important role in the effectiveness of the examined cosmetic products.
