Abstract

Šafran (Crocus sativus L., Iridaceae) se široko uzgaja kao ljekovita i začinska biljka. Sadrži oko
150 hlapljivih i nehlapljivih sastavnica. Glavni identificirani bioaktivni spojevi su safranal, krocin i
pikrokrocin, koji su također odgovorni za njegovu aromu i gorak okus. Postojeći klinički dokazi
ukazuju da suplementacija šafranom može imati povoljne učinke na različite bolesti i zdravstvene
tegobe, uključujući depresiju, Alzheimerovu bolest, anksioznost, metabolički sindrom, dijabetes,
seksualnu disfunkciju, glaukom i dr. Potrebna su daljnja istraživanja kako bi se razjasnili
mehanizmi djelovanja i osigurala dovoljna razina dokaza za njegovu kliničku primjenu. Ovaj rad
istražuje povijesni aspekt, bioaktivne sastavnice, kliničke studije i sigurnosni profil šafrana.

Abstract (english)

Saffron (Crocus sativus L., Iridaceae) is a widely cultivated plant which earned its popularity as
both medicine and spice. It contains about 150 volatile and nonvolatile compounds. The major
bioactive compounds identified are safranal, crocin, and picrocrocin, which are also responsible
for its aroma as well as its bitter taste. The existing clinical evidence suggests that oral saffron
supplementation may have beneficial effects on various disease and helath complaints including
depression, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, sexual dysfunction,
glaucoma etc. Further research is required to clarify the mechanisms of actions and provide a
sufficient level of evidence for its clinical application. The present work explores the historical
background, bioactive constituents, clinical studies and safety profile of saffron.
